Five million uninsured children would receive health coverage by the year 2000, according to the children's health initiative included in President Clinton's fiscal 1998 budget proposal. In addition to the president's proposal on children's health care, the congressional Democrats have made the issue their top health priority. Republicans also have expressed interest in pursuing a solution to reduce the number of uninsured children. "We've been urging President Clinton and Congress to make children's coverage the next step in incremental health reform," AAP President Robert Hannemann, M.D., said. "It's gratifying to see the president's leadership in offering a solution that is a good first step toward insuring all children and adolescents."
