Pediatricians should be alert to signs of stress in grandparent caregivers because of the 40 percent rise over the past 10 years in the number of children living with their grandparents, particularly in African American communities, a California study suggested. Statistics show that 3.2 million children - more than 12 percent of African Americans, nearly 6 percent of Hispanic and almost 4 percent of whites - live with their grandparents. These data prompted researchers to conduct an exploratory study of 71 African American grand-mothers, ages 49 to 79, whose self-reports of good or fair health were contradicted by questionnaire responses indicating their health actually was deteriorating.
