Portrait: Suspended in time

Ellika Bartlett, shown in August 1981 at age 5 months, balances on her father's hand at her grandmother's cottage on Honeoye Lake, Rochester, N.Y. Her mother Catherine Barlett, M.D., FAAP, of Northhampton, Mass., said Ellika then would fling herself backwards into the water, "Dad would scoop her up, and she would wriggle and shriek until he stood her up to do it again." Dr. Bartlett reported that Ellika, now 16, competes in springboard diving at her high school.
