Most parents are familiar with and understand the current movie ratings system. But what exactly does "TV-Y7 FV" or "TV-MA DS" mean when it appears on a television screen? In an effort to educate the public about the ratings system, the Academy joined the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) and other child advocacy groups to launch a public awareness initiative to help families learn and use the new system. The campaign, Tools to Use When You Choose, includes: a brochure that explains the ratings system and guides parents to additional resources like the Academy; a short instructional video featuring Bob Keeshan, the original Captain Kangaroo, that would be appropriate for use by parents in the home, parents' meetings, pediatricians' offices, community gatherings and classrooms; and a sticker, suitable for the backs of TV remotes, that lists the ratings and their descriptions.
