It has been estimated that approximately 10 percent of children in the United States today have some type of disabling condition. Many of these children have been helped to be more functional in their daily lives or in their school achievement by "assistive devices"braces for legs, or wheelchairs. The use of tape recorded lessons for a child with a severe reading disability could also be considered a form of assistive device.
