An 'ethical stand' on formula ads

Derrick B. Jelliffe M.D., FAAP1

1 Professor of Public Health and Pediatrics University of California, Los Angeles Co-Editor, Journal of Tropical Pediatrics

The recent letters by Dr. Jon Rohde (AAP News, Oct. 1990) and Dr. Jeanne Marconi (AAP News, Dec. 1990) are exactly right. We of the AAP (and similar organizations in most countries) are two-faced and hypocritical. We usually support breast-feeding — atleast in a minimalist fashion — but can functionally destroy our sometimes abstract support by negating our devout declamations by neutering financial entanglements with formula companies, such as support for meetings, research and other activities.
