Incest and pedophilia and all other forms of sexual abuse and molestation produce widespread and often irreparable harm to children. As such, they deserve the attention and opposition of the American Academy of Pediatrics and child advocates in general. There is an overwhelming consensus in the pediatric literature that both the overt and more subtle forms of sexual abuse of children are productive of both short term (physical injury, venereal disease, unwanted pregnancy) and long term (guilt, sexual maladjustment, hostility) undesirable effects.
